10/27/09. We started the day in Jamestown with the first white settlement in 1606. We saw Indian huts and Stella and Anna and Anna got to scrape hair off the deer hide in preparation for making clothing out of it.

The group also got to tour the 3 ships Susan Constant, Godsby, and Discovery. The students explored the Jamestown settlement and briefly viewed part of the museum, then headed down to the Jamestown glassblowing factory.

Caroline Langoon was our red-headed tour guide who talked fast and animated. She was helped make history come alive!

The group then headed off to Historic Williamsburg, the most historic mile in America . The day was overcast and the walk through town was most enjoyable. We wandered through many buildings that were either original buildings or restored to authentic state. There were many people in period dress and playing the role in conversation.

This group of jurors found jurors found Mrs. Beatty guilty of stealing clothes for her freezing children. She was branded with a T and let go.

After a quick stop at the gift stores and the stockades, the group headed down to the Tavern for a delicious dinner and entertainment. We had several period actors that came through playing and singing music of the period.

Then we headed back to the Capital building for a ‘dancing diversion’. We were treated to an enjoyable demonstration of colonial style dance accompanied by a violin performer. The dancers performed a dance to the Minuet, then they took some student volunteers and taught them. The dances became progressively more complicated, and by the end of the hour, all the students and half of the parents had danced with the Virginian’s whose motto was to “Dance or Die!”

We then made another stop for storytelling hour and learned more about the slaves and their role in the Williamsburg settlement.
